Last Sunday was a day for the ducks as the weather was beautiful for them but not for the spectators as the rain fell prior to the race at Westport’s beautiful tree lined Mall. The spectators braved the elements following Mass for the biggest race since the Epsom Derby the day before and it was a quacking atmosphere.
The race itself was a paddle for the ducks as they glided past the historic St. Mary’s Church, where prayers were said by pious devotees for the good of the parish. The video on the club’s Facebook Page truly encapsulates the climax to a thrilling race. The top five ducks to win the race were Virgil Van Duck (7/1), Quack of Gold (14/1), Duck Tales (5/1), Quacker (9/1) and Ducky Alli (6/1). As a result, there were five winners of some wonderful prizes and they were Padraic Cunningham, Ruby Prendergast, Padraig Kelly, Ann Marie McGuire and Teresa Dawson.
Many thanks to everybody that went out and sold ducks and to everyone who supported the race. Thanks to all our sponsors and to everyone that was involved in the preparations for the event. A final word of thanks to the Quay NS on supplying the ducks to make it a special day at The Mall.
