It was a historic weekend for Westport United as both underage teams that were in action scored famous wins.
In the Skechers SFAI U.14 Regional Cup Final, Westport took on Merville United and they had to work hard to earn their win against a gutsy side. While Westport had opportunities in the first half and Merville also threatened, the first period ended scoreless. The second half saw the match open up and Westport eventually took the driving seat and two goals were enough to win the match for an excellent Westport side while Merville certainly gave it everything to make the game a fascinating cup tie. This is the third SFAI Regional Cup this particular group has won, following on from U.12 and U.13. The win sets Westport up nicely for the last 32 tie at home to Ennis Town.
The Sports Park was the venue over many years for some legendary matches, whether it’s juniors or underage but the WFAI Girls U.14 Cup quarter final at the iconic old venue was going to be the latest chapter written into the history books. Westport United took on the might of Evergreen FC from Kilkenny and on paper, this game looked a very tough one to call and it proved to be so. Westport United started so brightly but Evergreen gradually grew into the contest. Both sides had opportunities and it was the Kilkenny outfit that broke the deadlock with sensational strike. Westport did everything but were kept at bay through tight defending and good goalkeeping but their rewards came for their perserverance with a coolly slotted equaliser and that was the half time score. In the second half, Evergreen became the more dominant side and Westport defended excellently with top class goalkeeping and Westport did have their spells also. In fairness, both sides put in a defensive masterclass when needed but while Evergreen were a dominant side and most likely to grab a second, there was a sense that Westport could nick a goal against the run of play and it was Westport that grabbed the all important winner in virtually the last kick of the game and it was a beautiful thunderbolt to win it for the girls. The girls were over the moon after the final whistle, celebrating their historic win and now they await their semi final draw and on the evidence of Saturday, nobody would like to be facing this excellent girls team.
