It was a mixed weekend for our underage sides in Connaught competitions over the weekend.
The U.14’s took on Mervue United in their Connaught Cup quarter final and it was a very tough, tight game with only a few clear cut chances throughout, made even more difficult by a gale but that didn’t curtail the enthusiasm displayed by the players on the pitch. Mervue took the lead from a disputed penalty and Westport equalised shortly after. Westport hit the crossbar while Mervue nearly won the contest at the end of extra time. It took a penalty shootout to settle the matter and Mervue advanced 4-3 on spot kicks. The Westport lads were disappointed but they gave it everything and can be proud of themselves.
The U.16 team took on Boyle Celtic and it is usually a difficult place to come away with a win but the Westport lads were absolutely sensational against a good team in an enthralling footballing contest but Westport, with their brilliance had a comfortable win at the end.
