Partry Athletic scored late to deny Westport United B a fifth win in a row in a brilliant game on Saturday evening. Partry took the lead on twelve minutes when they got on the end of a well worked set play routine to fire the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box. Westport levelled matters just before the break when David Groden was given all the time in the world to pick his spot and his brilliant left foot effort from the edge of the box curled into the top left-hand corner of the Partry net. It was Groden that put Westport in front midway through the second half as he was quickest to react after Aaron Cannon initial effort was blocked by a defender. Westport looked like they would hold out to take all three points but the hosts hit the goal of the game to grab an equaliser for Partry with just five minutes remaining as his sweet first time volley flew over the Westport keeper and into the back of the net.
Westport United had to come from a goal behind early in the second half to make it six wins from six as they continued their perfect start to the season with a 2-1 win over Claremorris. Claremorris took the lead on fifty-three minutes thanks to a stunning volley. Claremorris cleared a Westport freekick as a ball out of defence was headed on and the Claremorris attacker allowed it to bounce once before volleying the ball over Gary Cunningham in the Westport goal. Westport though were level within five minutes as Phil Keegan headed home a corner at the near post. Keegan then turned provider as he set up Mikey O’Brien to score what turned out to be the winner eight minutes later. Dave Cameron found Keegan down the right wing and he got to the by-line before pulling the ball back to O’Brien and his first time shot nestled in the bottom left hand corner of the Claremorris net.
