In the Quarter Final of the Tonra Cup on Saturday evening, it wasn’t to be for Westport United B as Claremorris B advanced in a penalty shootout win after the game finished level after extra time. Westport went into the tie unbeaten but Claremorris dug deep to keep Michael Gibbons side as bay as the goalkeeper was the hero for the home side with a crucial save in the shootout.
The Juniors took on Manulla in a frentic league encounter and got off to the best possible start when a penalty from Darren Browne and a free kick from Mikey O’Brien had United up and running inside ten minutes. Manulla got two quick goals themselves to make it 2-2 which was the scoreline at the break. The hosts took an early lead in the second half and soon made it 4-2 and while Jesper Frisch made it 4-3 and United had a brilliant opportunity to make it 4-4, the hosts pierced the dagger straight into United’s hearts with a fifth goal to make it 5-3 and then closed the game out in an eight goal thriller.
