Another busy week of underage fixtures with seventeen games between boys and girls, a couple of divisional titles and a penalty shootout between two of our club teams.
in the U.13 League, the U.13 B team travelled to Knock to take on Kiltimagh/Knock United B. It was a difficult and challenging tie for the team and both sides played really well. Westport came out on top at the end with a 3-1 win. The U.13 C team took on, Ballyhaunis, knowing that a win would see them as divisional winners. Ballyhaunis made it a very difficult tie but Westport did play very well to earn themselves a flattering scoreline to win their division. The Westport United E team took on Conn Rangers B and played excellent football to record a huge win against a very brave side. In the U.13 Cup, Westport United travelled to Castlebar Celtic and both teams made the tie a fabulous contest. Westport played really well but Castlebar Celtic were in fine form themselves and it was Castlebar that advanced on a 2-0 scoreline. In the U.13 Trophy, Manulla B took on Westport United C and it was a very close game between two excellent sides and it was Manulla who progressed with a narrow 1-0 win. It was an all-Westport United affair in the U.13 Shield as the D team took on the E team and what an interesting match up that was. Neither side could be separated and the D team had genuine appeals for a penalty but a free kick was given instead. Unfortunately, there’s no VAR for that incident. Neither side could be separated in normal or extra time in the goalless encounter and it was down to a penalty shootout and it was the E team that went through on a 3-2 scoreline.
In the Girls U.12 League, Westport United took on Castlebar Celtic and it was a brilliant performance by Westport that overcame a very good Castlebar Celtic side 3-0.
In the Boys U.15 League, Westport United took on Kiltimagh/Knock United and despite the best efforts of the East Mayo team, Westport United were far too good and ran out comfortable winners. The U.15B team took on Swinford and and not only they gave a credible performance, their opponents got the shock of their lives as Westport were tenacious throughout and the 5-2 win for Swinford was somewhat flattering. The U.15C team took on Killala, knowing that a win will crown them divisional winners. It was a very tough, tight game between the two divisional challengers with very little to choose from, which made this a truly absorbing tie with top quality football. Westport United sneaked a 2-1 win to become divisional champions. The D team took on Kiltimagh/Knock United B and were in brilliant form. Kiltimagh/Knock did everything they could and played some top drawer football but Westport were a gear above and won on a deceptively easy scoreline. In the U.15 Cup, Westport United recorded a 3-0 win against Straide and Foxford United while in the U.15 Trophy, Westport United C were excellent 3-0 winners against Partry Athletic.
In the Girls U.15 League, Westport United took on Swinford in a very competitive match that saw two top sides in action. In a brilliant encounter, Westport were 3-1 winners.
In the U.17 League, Westport United recorded a 3-0 win against Manulla while the B team also recorded a 3-0 win against Ballyheane. In the U.17 Cup, United had a thrilling tie away to Claremorris and it was tight and tough for the most part between two balanced sides. Westport did switch on the afterburners near the end to record a 4-2 win in a performance that was highly praised by the match official in charge of the match.
