It is with deep regret that Westport United FC learned of the passing of John Joe Flood.

Before emigrating to England, John Joe Flood was goalkeeper for Westport United in the same era as Jackie Foley. Talented between the posts, John Joe Flood was a Mayo League winner back in 1964. This was a time when Westport United were about to embark on a very successful spell in winning league titles. While John Joe Flood might not have had been as well known as other Westport United legends of back then, due to his move to England, he certainly wasn't forgotten by his teammates and supporters from the 1960's.

John Joe Flood was laid to rest in Aughavale Cemetery earlier in the week following Funeral Mass St Mary's Church.

John Joe will be sadly missed by his loving wife Maureen, sons John and Paul, daughters-in-law Anne and Nicky, grandchildren Patrick, Luke,Céire, Evie and Dylan, brother Christy, aunt Nan Ludden (Westport), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours and Westport United extends its deepest condolences.

May his gentle soul rest in peace
